Citrus fruit has been cultivated for thousands of years. There are generally three authentic “varieties” of citrus: the grapefruit - Citrus grandis -, the mandarin - Citrus reticulata – and the citron or cedrat - Citrus medica. All other varieties, such as the orange, are hybrids of these variants.
In addition to being consumed fresh, citrus fruit is also pressed for juices. Oils are even extracted from the peel and used as seasoning and in perfumes. We partner with South African producer SAFE, amongst others, to offer a wide range of citrus fruit.
A lemon contains approximately 10 kcals and 2,5 grams carbohydrates. It contains no proteins or fats. That is why lemons have a far more sour taste than oranges, which have a far higher sugar content. An orange contains approximately 48 kcals, 1 gram protein and 10 grams carbohydrates. The mandarin is another example. It contains about 16 kcals and 4 grams carbohydrates. What all citrus fruits have in common is that they are very rich in vitamin C.
